In 1943, US troops based in Rotorua were visited by the US First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, who was in town to wish the American soldiers well. She also visited local sights and met with a famous local woman, guide Rangi.
During Eleanor Roosevelt's tour of Whakarewarewa in 1943, Rangitiari welcomed her with a hongi; at the time this traditional greeting was considered audacious by Pakeha. A photograph taken at that moment made the front page of newspapers around the world.
